Before Dan Maples transformed it into one of the area¹s most popular and playable courses, the site had been a training facility for some of America's top thoroughbreds. As a tribute, Dan incorporated into this quality design, elements from the original estate, including part of the old training track.  The course features both a subtly rolling Scottish style front nine and dramatic elevation changes on the wooded back nine. Golf Digest deemed Longleaf as "the most playable course in the Pinehurst area".
